Primitive Permutation Groups of Finite Morley Rank

We prove a version of the O'Nan-Scott Theorem for detinably primitive permutation groups of finite Morley rank. This yields questions about structures of finite Morley rank of the form (F, + , . , / / ) where (F, +,.) is an algebraically closed field and H is a central extension of a simple group with /Y=sGL(rt, F). We obtain partial results on such groups H, and show for example that if char(/...

The Minimal Base Size of Primitive Solvable Permutation Groups

A base of a permutation group G is a sequence B of points from the permutation domain such that only the identity of G fixes B pointwise. Answering a question of Pyber, we prove that all primitive solvable permutation groups have a base of size at most four.

Closures of Finite Primitive Permutation Groups

Let G be a primitive permutation group on a finite set ft, and, for k ^ 2, let G be the Ar-closure of G, that is, the largest subgroup of Sym (ft) preserving all the G-invariant ^-relations on ft. Suppose that G<H^ G and G and H have different socles. It is shown that k ^ 5 and the groups G and H are classified explicitly.

Permutation groups of Finite Morley rank

Introduction Groups of finite Morley rank made their first appearance in model theory as binding groups, which are the key ingredient in Zilber's ladder theorem and in Poizat's explanation of the Picard-Vessiot theory. These are not just groups, but in fact permutation groups acting on important definable sets. When they are finite, they are connected with the model theoretic notion of algebrai...

Finite permutation groups of rank 3

By the rank of a transitive permutation group we mean the number of orbits of the stabilizer of a point thus rank 2 means multiple transitivity. Interest is drawn to the simply transitive groups of "small" rank > 2 by the fact that every known finite simple group admits a representation as a primitive group of rank at most 5 while not all of these groups have doubly transitive representations. ...
